Run it for Google with "google" as the keyword. The problem is that nobody searches for "search".

Edit add: I just ran it as I suggested and it gives a value of $2,538,530. So the calculation is very dependent on the keyword chosen. Maybe it gives a better value to the keyword than it does to the domain?????

Well the way it works is, because it's impossible for an algorithm to easily know what a domain name "means", it asks for human inputted keywords instead.

E.g. my site "photonswarm.com" -- does it mean "photon swarm" or "photons warm"? An algorithm can't really determine what the domain means unless you state it explicitly. So yeah, the actual domain name is only used for size and TLD calculations, and the supplied keywords are used to work out what it might be worth by hitting up Yahoo!'s directory and the Overture search inventory.

Edit: the search issue brings up an interesting question. The word "search" in internet industries is highly charged, but does it have intrinsic value like similar charged words in other industries (e.g. "real estate")? I'd actually say it doesn't -- how many search engines actually have the word "search" in their domain name? For internet related sites, it seems companies prefer to build up a unique, quirky/recognizable/memorable brand name rather than a generic one.

Though... doesn't seem true for web hosting companies however. I guess it's different for B2B services.

Yeah, it´s worth developing a bit more - even just as a fun, sticky that you could offer to webmaster sites. I spent time playing about there and so did all the folks above me in this thread. Another great way to fritter away the working day!

    www.anthonycea.com

    Anthony Cea

    Yahoo! factor: 0.1
    Overture factor: 0.1
    TLD factor: 1
    Size factor: 0.928

Total value of domain: US $4,640

I think it would be a lot more accurate in general if the decimal place was moved three places left for all domains
