Prototype domain name valuation tool

Just something I whipped up last night, kind of for fun more than anything but I thought I'd see what other people think. Obviously something like this is only a guess and any real valuation would have to be done by humans, but it's a "first shot" at it anyway!

    Domain Name Appraisal tool

How it works and how to use it are all on the page, it's pretty self-explanatory :) Let me know what you think, whether it's worth developing something like this any further, etc...

I think I will be rich wth my exising domain. :D

Any way I tried it on imaginary ;) "webhosting.com" for the keyword "web hosting" and it quoted 5,385,633.

Does anyone know how the real webhosting.com weighs?

It's an interesting toy, but I think it puts too high a value on the domains. Two domains I own both were valued in excess of $1,000,000. Any buyers out there :) ?

What are the domains Bob

I ran this value on www.OSwar.com and got the following.

    Checking Yahoo!...
Checking Overture inventory (may take a while)...
    Yahoo! factor: 2.1821333333333
    Overture factor: 0.106414
    TLD factor: 1
    Size factor: 1

Total value of domain: US$ 232,210
    Value a domain
This tool attempts to calculate the value of a domain name. It approaches the valuation problem from the angle of determining how "popular" a domain name is, based on the number of hits in the Yahoo! directory, number of searches by web surfers, and how "easy to use" it might be based on its size and top level domain.

    Domain name:
    Domain name "keywords":
    e.g. "theregister.co.uk" = "the register"

    Summary of factors used

Yahoo! directory hits on phrase and keywords
Overture search inventory hits on phrase
    Size of name
Top level domain (e.g. .com, .biz)

I ran it on yourfriendlypharmacy.com for the keyword phrase 'online pharmacy' and on happy-meds.com for the keyword phrase 'buy meds online'.

I'm hereby offering both these domains, as up and running businesses, for sale at the bargain price of $1,250,000 each :D

Hehe. I need to refine the interface a bit more... the keywords box is supposed to be the actual words in the domain name really - i.e. putting in asdf.com and keywords "real estate" doesn't really give a good indicator (to use an extreme example!)

Also I agree it tends to be on the high side at the moment, mostly because the "normalized" value (if your domain is "perfectly named") is at $1mil.

I'll make some adjustments tomorrow. What I'd really like to do is tie in adwords bids (haven't been able to find any sources for this?), and the number of other similarly named domains (not to get values, but to get some kind of a "supply" figure -- not too sure where or how I'd do this). Any ideas for sources? :)

davedx, I think there should be consideration to the extra part of domains.

For eg, webhosting.com and webhostingtalk.com for the keyword "web hosting"

    US$ 5,206,111 => webhostingtalk.com
    US$ 5,385,633 => webhosting.com

I think webhostingtalk.com is less popular than the main one. But still its having value in similar range.

Just sign up as an affiliate to either of these sites and you could do fine. I have a bunch of affiliates and some of them are doing very well indeed.

If you need hosting I'll even provide that -- at a special reduced fee.

I'd sell these domains for $1,000,000, but even without selling them I expect to earn approximately $75,000 from them in the next 12 months.

BTW Anthony it just occurred to me that you are half way there already. You've already got the "dope" part down pat. Now all you have to work on is the "dealer" part. :D :p

It's never too late to mend your ways. People are still signing up as affiliates every day.

Well we are getting this thread badly off topic, but it doesn't cost anything to sign up as an affiliate. Your only costs are domain registration and hosting, and as I said I have a special hosting deal for anyone who signs up as an affiliate to either of my pharmacy sites.

Well Bob, this domain tool tells me that I am a Billionaire with the full valuation of my 400 domains, so I should be able to come up with a couple hundred dollars when I sell a name for a few million  :p

Total value of domain: US$ 82,803

    www.yahoo.com :

Total value of domain: US$ 83,493

It certainly has its limitations

Anyone reckon the idea is worth pursuing? I'm thinking it's one of those things that if it could be made reasonably reliable, someone would have done it already :D
