Can I give you a piece of helpful advice? If you can avoid doing business through PayPal, avoid it like your life depends on it. Because it just might. I’ve recently fallen victim to one of the most prevalent scams circulating around the Internet and what’s worse is that I’m powerless to do anything. I can’t even stop using this company’s services! My sad saga started more than a year ago and I’m writing this to help you, so you can learn how to protect yourself from PayPal. Some time last year I purchased a product online from a less than reputable website. I knew that when I bought the product I was running the risk of buying a product that I might never see, but I also knew that the product that I was buying was worth the risk. One of the reasons I bought the product, despite my reservations, was because the buy now button was created through PayPal and I felt reasonably safe buying through PayPal. That was mistake number one. A week or so later, when I hadn’t received any product, nor a reply from the website, I emailed PayPal to alert them of the fraud. I got an immediate form response that said they appreciated my effort to alert them of problems and that they’ll check it out and get back to me. The next day I received another email from PayPal saying that they were alerted to a fraud on my account from the website I purchased through. PayPal again said they were investigating the matter. I immediately tried to log into my PayPal account and was shocked to find out that it was frozen. Multiple attempts to reach PayPal and settle the dispute failed and the only thing I was told was that PayPal was currently investigating potential fraud and until then, my account was suspended. I didn’t know what to do, I had a lot of money in my account and if I didn’t have access to that money, I couldn’t pay my suppliers, I couldn’t receive money, I couldn’t conduct my business. I continued fighting PayPal and the only thing I learnt was that it would take 6 months to settle the case. Until then, I was out of luck. I literally was stuck with no recourse. I switched all my websites from PayPal to one of their competitors and tried to restart my business as best I could. I realized soon enough that my sales were suffering without a PayPal button. It seems that a lot of people have the same faith in PayPal that I used to have and people don’t trust websites that don’t work with PayPal. I was trapped. I didn’t trust working with PayPal and I couldn’t function adequately without them. I felt like I had no choice but to open up a brand new PayPal account and try to protect myself better. I felt nervous about my decision, but I didn’t know what else to do. Thankfully, during my search for help with my PayPal problem, I encountered an eBook that claimed to teach me everything there is to know about working safely with PayPal. Before I opened my new account, I read the book from cover to cover. Now, although this fight took more than a year, I feel much happier that this fight occurred. The damage to my business was significant, but I’ve recovered and I’m smarter for it. I know that with the precautions that I put in place, I’ll never have to worry about a PayPal freeze again.
