It available as 'extension' or self install. (Very recommended) Use strong security for registration (combination of captcha). Think to use strong combination of captcha and authentication. (Very recommended) Use security gateway to filter any spam activities. (Recommended) Enable activation for new user registration. User will be able to register but can't do anything before the account activated. (good for some scenarios) Enable Invitation Only. Only selected people with invitation able to register. (only good for secure and private forum) Block access from certain IP or whole range (only for advanced user) Most spammers use software that is able to register new account and make post in any forum. Whenever your forum got spammed heavily, it is best to follow the steps above. For links and picture, it is best to get it from search engine. I know few links but it maybe outdated (only for Vbuletin) If the question is about "how to protect the forum from being spammed by the user, then the answer would be different".
