Pros /Cons of linking to www. versus non www.

What are the pros and cons. We are looking at some link strategies and I was wondering if anyone knows the advantages of linking to www. pages versus their non-www. urls.

Meaning, backlinks on other sites, why should they link to www.mydomain.com and NOT to the mydomain.com?

you should have the domain redirected either way. (either www->non or non->wwww)

The redirect to becomes your pref link domain.
But if not no real harm done.

If you don't do the redirect G may sink you due to dupli content when people link all over the place.

G should be the most advanced engine but they can't sort out www and non www if you don't do it for them.

It's usually best to link to the full URL. It prevents errors that may be generated from various sources like bots or certain servers.

The best thing would be to choose one option and go with it for everything to make sure you get as much weight on your domain name as possible without spreading it around. I would always use www. myself because of the reason I mentioned above.

    hope that helps.

i think if your users are used to typing in addresses starting with 'www.' for every other site they visit, you should stick to convention. However, if most of your links go to example.com, dont bother changing. In general though it's better to stick with www. - especially because programs like Outlook and some forums will turn a simply typed 'www.example.com' into a proper HTML link ( <a href="http://www." ...) whereas they can't detect example.com and so don't turn it into a link, which then doesnt count as a backlink to your site
