Just go with a sentence or two and make sure you include your target keywords or phrases towards the start and you are good to go.

The meta description is recognized up to 160 characters in most search engines, so put relevant keywords forming a sentence and create meta description. Put keywords in page title. Put keywords (comma separated) in meta keywords. Meta keywords is ignored by Google.

This is a great guide to go by, as Google generally recognizes small keywords and phrases.
