Proof that Google Uses META Descr. Tag

    IF you've ever needed proof that google sometimes DOES use meta tag descriptions to describe a SERP check out my entry in the precharge projectnet seo contest. View source and check the META description and you'll see that it matches this SERP:

    And this isn't a fluke it's been like this since yesterday and even now search "precharge projectnet" and look at the third entry and you'll see it for yourself.

    Thank You

    Nice one Diddy1. I wasn't too sure about this issue myself. Does this always happen?

    They use the description very often for the snippet, unless the search term that the page comes up is in a better one that google takes from the body itself. If you do a site: command, usually the snippit is the description tag (obviously since there are no search terms to highlight)

    allseocontest.com is ranked 1
    am not sure but i think this is because the firt 2 words of their description are
    "precharge projectnet"
    am i right ?what do you think everybody ? and i'd like to see the other websites testing by having "precharge projectnet" the first 2 words of the meta description

    1. Google isn't using anything to "describe a SERP" - it's using the snippet to match the search term(s) in your search query (SERP = Search Engine Results Page)

    2. There never was any doubt that Google used the description tag as ONE of the sources for snippets matching the search terms

    3. Using the description meta tag for such snippets does not demonstrate or provide any evidence that the contents of the snippet are used at all for ranking the page

    agree with point #3 - it's displaying the tag but it doesn't mean it counts for anything in ranking the page.. :eek:

    If your search is results is taken from the site's title, I believe that they will take the meta description. If it is taken from the content or somewhere else, most likely you will see are the surrounding text.

    Hi thanks for the post but I think no one has ever doubted that the description tag is still among the ones being used by Google and other engines.

    Sure this post may be useless.... but at least he got to drop another 'editorial' Link... ha ha ha ha....

    Oh and what's are SEO contests anyways? Something SEos do when they don't have enough CLIENTS to get rankings for?

    It proves the participants are a little light on clients if U ask me.. I know I certainly don't have time to be 'playing' around obtaining phantom rankings.. yeesh

    Add these tags to the <head> </head> section of all your pages and then add a meta description tag:

    <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP">
    <META NAME="msnbot" CONTENT="NOODP">
    <META NAME="Slurp" CONTENT="NOODP">
