    Instead of spending 3-4K on advertising... Why not spend 3-4K making your directory totally unique. Add great mods via An0n and most importantly develop free tools for people to use. A paid links vanishes when you stop paying. If someone links to you via a free tool chances are it will stay for free. Also if you have a good tool it will end up on a page or a sitewide of PR0 - PR7+... Nothing like getting a FREE PR6 LINK for life? Think about it. Spend all your money on your site not advertising it. Make the site pleaseant and funcational and a great resource to your VISITOR. If you build a site for your visitor you are inadvertantly building a nice site for google. Don't loose sight of the fact that your DIR will only be successful if you build it for your visitors as after all it is them that you need to succeed. With 3-4K you could make something very unique or just another general directory that is PR5 with HUGE MONTHLY bills. The choice is yours but since you are at the beginning I can't stress enough how you will be better off long term if you spend all tha tmoney ON BUILDING YOUR SITE, not promoting it.

    An0n is Rob aka the resident PHPLD Guru. If you ever need anything that makes you nauseous it's so tricky just ask him. He knows PHPLD as well as anyone.

    Dude, you need to get a new skin.
    That's the first thing you should have done before announcing your new directory.

    @williamjack

    Change the category structure,make an unique one.This is really important.Also you should parse rss feeds on your listing pages to prevent supp index.I usually don't pay any bucks if the listing page is on supp index.

    All my best wishes are with you Sanjay. I know you are promoting it hard --and as Amit has given you all the initial advices --I have nothing to say more.
    Except one thing --be a long-distance runner and don't run too fast in the beginning. Have patience --

    Remember --something ---

    Slow and steady wins the race.:D Work for 6 months --and as Amit said --you will be proud owner of a Real Web Directory. Most of the time I am online on MSN/YM. You can always get me there. Sorry --my phone is always busy as Amit knows:D

    I agree with all you said except that part. You really dont need anything more than shared hosting for most directories. One niche directory that I have that gets 5,000 uniques a day (and has a graphical template) does just fine on shared.

    But it does depend on where you get your shared hosting.

    Point being is 96.2% of the directories out there wont pull enough traffic to need anything above shared hosting.

    With that being said, I don’t think you need any more advice. ;)
    Great post Amit.

    I can see that you are going to do it right as you have mentioned in your post. Try to create some content along with a directory to have better result in search engines. Blog seems to be a hot tool for this purpose.

    Good Luck Sanjay
