Promoting expensive stuff...

    Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of promoting a niche which has high price per items. Those items are about $1,000(min) - $6,000(max).

I have found a lot of offers on CJ for this niche but i cannot overlook the fact that when people buy expensive stuff (professional equipment in this case) They might call to make the order by phone with wire transfer, due to credit card limitations.
Because this is a niche with big numbers i might spend a lot of money to compete with other sites (i do PPC) and wont get my commissions regularly.

Has anyone had any experience with promoting expensive items?

    Thanks...

I've promoted HDTVs before which were in the $2k range, and had moderate success but it was not because of a credit card limitation. Most people who buy $k items will use their credit cards (who would forego getting points on their CC) so that's not an issue that I found.

Like you mentioned PPC costs are very high, and starting off can be costly but eventually as your CTR increases and your QS improves the costs go down, but you need to constantly monitor your ad campaign to make sure you don't end up spending a fortune and having a negative ROI. Eventually though I gave up because the ROI I was getting did not justify all the effort and the more importantly the risk.

If you're promoting specialized equipment, I would suggest talking to some people who would be likely to buy this type of equipment. Learn about their buying habits, would they buy this online, where do they normally buy from, what kind of information do they need before making a decision? Gather this information before and you'll at least get a better idea of whether it's worth investing any money in this.

Alternatively you could also set yourself a fixed budget amount to see if you can at least breakeven and then adjust your campaign accordingly.

    Good luck with your campaign.

I see no difference in conversion rate with the higher ticket items compared to lower price items.

I do both however....and both the low price and high price conversion rates have decline for me :(

This is probably due to the high cost of fuel and food....people have less disposable income.

Economic downturn, summer vacations, people buying new houses. There are a lot of reasons which can explain people's lower disposable income.

We just have to tough it out until Christmas season comes around...Or start promoting credit and loan products :)

Many stores don't take wire-transfers or direct bank transfers as methods of payment - most people are more comfortable with giving out their CC number than their bank account number. I don't think it's really an issue...

I am not one of the big boys and have limited experience. I have created a mix of big-ticket and small-ticket sites.

I have been running affiliate sites since before Christmas. At first, my sites were focused on products in the $5 -$30 range. Good traffic, pretty decent and constant sales in the lower half of this price range.

Couple of months ago I added some big ticket sites. I am going with purely organic or very minimal ppc for these sites. I get a fair number of clicks, but I find that about once a month I get a big sale. I also have found that I get a lot of lookie-loos on the big-ticket sites and pick up a fair amount of change on sales of unrelated products.

The big-ticket sites work for me because I don't do ppc and kept costs low.
