Promoting a Social Bookmarking website?

I am in the midst of creating a new social bookmarking website, just need some ideas on how to promote it. I know the best place would probably be in webmaster forums, but I don't think that will generate enough traffic. Any other ideas??

    Thanks!

Webmaster forums would definitly be the best place to start, once you have the submissiosn coming in, supplying you've got a half decent website, you'll see some SE traffic start coming in and from there, it's just a case of making sure it doesn't die!

Do you have any plans on how to deal with spam :) ? As for promotion, submit a press release first to some 20-25 press release websites, blog commenting should work if you can make bloggers bookmark their post on your site.

For spam I think I will hire some moderators, and then block certain websites that I know I don't want to be submitted into the site. I hope that will be enough.

Sounds like a good idea! Can you recommend any press release websites??

    Thanks!

I don't want to disclose the name until its finished. I still have to talk to a lawyer about trademarks and copyright laws :)

I agree. People will respond positively to a DoFollow, yet if it does not have a high PR they might not even consider it.

Press Releases are a great way to get exposure. Make sure it is professionally written. You can also consider writing articles about social bookmarking. If the articles are informative enough and have a good keyword density they can get you a great deal of links.

Also, you may want to consider an email marketing campaign. It sounds like a "been there, done that" kind of proposal, but it actually may be worth it. You contact people directly . Make sure the emails are targeted and that you are reaching people who have opted in to receive the emails from whichever the service provider you hired. I think you can even try building your own list. Remember that you need to try to increase your sites PR first, especially since people want to social bookmark to sites that are established and have a high PR.

    Thanks for the ideas! :)

For email marketing do people legally have to opt-in to receive emails, or could I find a bunch of blogs and use the contact forms and the emails provided under their contact sections to email them about my website, without them opting in?
