Promoting a Gardening site

I've got a new gardening site that I want to promote so it can show up higher on the search engines. My partner suggested submitting to directories and doing social bookmarking. Will this help? And are there other things I can do?

    Thanks for helping.

submitting to quality directories, yes this one can help but in Social bookmarking I don't think so as most SB uses no follow tag,. but this one can help you to boost your site's traffic,.
Just do link building using your target keyword as anchor,.

Directories can help, but your best bet is to first of all ensure your page is SEO ready! There is nothing worse then starting a site off on the wrong foot.

Second, get backlinks, quality ones from members on DP ( Like Me ;) ) then and only then can you start ranking for the terms your after.

I rarely ever do directory submissions and I have sites ranking all over the place for different niches.
