I am just curious if most of you talk yourself things like php and asp or did you go to traditional school or tech school? I have realized I have a strong interest in these things and I was thinking of taking some classes. How should I precede and if I decide the school route, can you recommend a good school?
It's much less expensive and easier to simply teach yourself online, in my opinion. There's never before been more free resources available. Why waste your money?
I think this depends on what your goals are... Is this just a "hobby" or just to "hack around" enough that you can put up websites and do some Internet Marketting? If so, then I would think about how you learn. Do you lean best in a class-type environment? I would say start by checking out some programming classes at your local community college or even adult education center. These can be quite cheap. Note that there is more than just the value of having an instructor-led program...you can talk with other people (the instructor is a prime target!) and get all sorts of insights. Sometimes it is worth more (the discussions with the instructor in and out of class) than the actual programming class. If you are serious about computer science, which is far deeper and more involved than just programming, then you probably want to look closely at more of a degree program...associates or Bachelors. Now, for just plain code crunching, you can learn an awful lot just from online. It has the virtue of being really cheap. Look at examples. Tutorials abound. also, invest $20 in a good book. Check online for the good ones. It really comes down to what your interest is. For myself, software and systems development is a career...so I am finishing up my Master's degree in computer science. But this is a career choice I made a long time ago. Some ideas for you to think about...
You WILL learn better when you teach yourself, at your own pace. I know, I have done it. Just mess around; try something new every time.
