I've had some success with elance, and some failures with elance. Just awful code returned.

I'm a programmer myself though, starting from the analysis stage. I can delegate tasks well. It's tough to find a good consultant that can just take some specs (which are almost always wrong to begin with) and create a piece of software. I also develop web apps for a living and being face to face to work out specs and review shippable products and test new iterations is worth its weight in gold. Find someone local if you can.

You'll find tons of programmers at rentacoder.com. Your success of course, will depend on how much you know about outsourcing in general.

Is rentacoder.com worth the time? I've been using SL and Elance but while former is so so OK, I've never found anyone usable on Elance (not one chosen bidder). I used to use GAF few years ago, but asked to have my account cancelled cause admins were ridiculous. That leaves me with only SL that's useful, but would like to try another platform. But if rentacoder is as worthless as elance, I won't bother creating an account and going through all that initial crap.

One thing to remember is that outsourcing isn't an instant solution. I can't speak for the experiences you've had with those other sites, but as a freelancer working through RentACoder, I can tell you the site is much safer than the others and your work is guaranteed there. It helps of course, if you really know how to properly vet programmers. Also helps if you know how to work with others. Easier said than done my friend.

It's somehow sad that even if you want to invest money, you cannot find top and reliable programmer these days.

I've been looking for a PHP programmer for more than three months to complete and upgrade an unfinished social website and I only found people who don't have required knowledge or those who waste my time.

If anyone can recommend me a skilled web programmer with references I would be really glad!
