Do you take an upfront payment if the project is over $200.00.

like 50% or 33.3% or whatever. Or do you do the work up front and hope to get paid?

    Please let me know.

I checked "50%". But I would always be willing to do a 33-33-33 deal. Something to get started with, something when you can actually show progress, and the rest at the end...

I like to get some payment upfront as well. I usually ask for 50%, depending on the person / project.

to me, actually that will depend with the client I am working with. If he is a regular client, some times I will work upfront. If the project is small scale (<$500)..I ill ask for 50% upfront 30% after completion and 20% after week or two of the completion. For large scale projects I will ask for an up-front with every client usually 30-40% upfront.

For a web project we would either ask for a deposit or the use of Escrow (at the clients expense) if there is any design element. If it is pure programming we may waive our deposite but naturally not hand over the code until payment in full has been made.

Deposites vary in amount subject to the design/ programming split but typically are 25% up front, 25% after design and 50% on completion - the more design required the more up front is required as the risk of a client leaving with the design is higher.

That said we dont ever work on projects as small as $200 but do have a min deposit of $300 (given current exchange rates) for when a deposit is required but then 25% normally takes it above this amount by some way

I do the work and take the payment before turning the project over. No matter what the payment method, I make sure there is a legally binding contract incase the client tries to back out of payment.
