Apple’s iPad – A Review The iPad is the latest Apple innovation in handheld mobile video, web browsing, and audio technology. The iPad is a fully featured and versatile option for many different types of end users. Its unique combination of productivity and entertainment features and large suite of software applications give it a hybrid type of functionality somewhere between an iPhone and iPod touch. The iPad is one of the most talked about developments in the technology blogosphere. Reviews on the product have been mixed, with some tech reviewers claiming it to be the next great mobile eBook reader and web browsing hybrid, while others see it more as an overpriced iPhone. The iPad has also been extensively compared to the Amazon Kindle as a competitor. However, the Kindle has a much lower price and very different technology. The iPad’s main features are as follows: • 1 Gigahertz Apple A4 Processor • A 9.7 inch LED multi-touch display • 30 pin dock connector for wired accessories • 1024x768 resolution • 16-64 GB of storage (depends on the model) • Bluetooth 2.1 • 802.11n Wi-Fi iPad Strengths The iPad’s major strengths are its web browsing capability and multimedia management software. The iPad comes with a suite of multimedia software that uses the interactive nature of the large touch screen to manage and browse through files. The iPad's interface is very similar to the iPhone and iPod touch. The interface is very simple and intuitive with several default apps including an eBook reader, video viewer, web browser, audio library, and more. The eBook reader is particularly cool as it allows users to virtually flip through pages by tapping on a page or swiping one finger across a page. eBooks are easy to read on the generously large screen, and the capacity for color display gives the iPad an advantage over the Kindle. Web browsing on an iPad is similar to an iPhone with touch screen browsing. The iPad has a battery life of around 10 hours which allows for lengthy browsing while on the run. The comic book reader is exceptional, as comics show up brilliantly in color on the large display and are easy to browse through. The PDF reader is also much better than the Kindle’s as it allows touch scrolling and easy zooming in and out. The iPad is also able to play HD videos on Youtube with ease. Streaming video from Netflix works well on the iPad, and the ability to carry a streaming movie with a light and portable device anywhere you go is a useful feature while traveling. iPad Disadvantages There are some disadvantages to the iPad. The iPad’s virtual keyboard is somewhat difficult to type quickly on. For shorter sentences and paragraph it works well. The hardware inside of the iPad is not really designed for advanced gaming. The iPad does not have the ability to multitask, which for many users is a major disadvantage. Even with these disadvantages, the iPad works wonders for mobile multimedia. The ability to stream video on a large screen with a light and easy to carry handheld device is a unique capability of the iPad. The digital media readers are in many ways better than the Kindle. Reading a color eBook or comic book on an iPad is both interactive and visually appealing. The iPad excels at mobile entertainment, and for those who enjoy having mobile access to video, audio, and eBooks easily available to them on a large touchscreen display, the iPad can work quite well.
