Processes Hanging

I am having a bit of a problem with my hosting and the maximum number of processes. I am using Hostgator and generally they have been great, but now I have about 12 sites all using the same mysql DB. My traffic is increasing nicely but at peak times I am getting lots of server 500 errors. With HG help this has been traced to 'Hanging Processes' but they wont/cant tell me what is causing it. They have a set limit to concurrent processes of 25.

My pages have about 7 include files (just simple php for menus, header and footers), 1 SELECT query, and a session used to enable a back to previous page link. The SELECT query does have about 3 joins in. All my links to images etc are the full http://www.sitename.co/images ............ I am using some /home/username/public_html/sitename/images links to check if images exist using file_exists.

I know its difficult to diagnose the problem with this limited amount of into but any ideas on how I can find out what is causing processes hang ups?

    Thanks.
