Problems Using NoIndex, Pages Dropped That Shouldn't

I'm having an issue that I can't seem to figure out with NOINDEX and NOFOLLOW.

I recently read up on duplicate content issues, and because I list entries on my blog in several places (categories, archives, pages) I thought it would make sense to NOINDEX these pages with a META tag.

This would leave the article page and home page as the only possible locations for content showing up in the index (in theory).

Now, because I was noindexing my archive and category pages, I also used a rel="nofollow" on the links to these pages. They weren't going to be listed in the index anyway.

Well now a couple weeks later, the category and archive pages have been completely removed from the index (as expected).

However, the archive pages have also been removed! These are the only pages I wanted to keep and they're gone. So now I'm scrambling trying to figure out exactly where I misinterpreted NOINDEX and can't seem to figure this out.

    Here are some examples:

    - Archive Page (Should be indexed. There is not a nofollow meta tag)
    http://www.mactips.org/archives/2008...-mailto-links/

    - Category Page (Should not be indexed, it has a meta nofollow tag)
    http://www.mactips.org/archives/category/mail-tips/

    On this page I have: <meta name="robots" content="noindex" />

    - Home Page (Should be indexed (and is). There is not a nofollow meta tag)
    http://www.mactips.org

Here are my indexed pages in Google: http://www.google.com/search?q=site%...ient=firefox-a

There are a couple archive pages still indexed, but not nearly as many as before my change: http://www.google.com/search?q=site%...ient=firefox-a

This leads me to wonder whether the problem is really with the NOFOLLOW on the links as opposed to the NOINDEX meta tags.

I'm terribly confused here and am almost ready to completely undo all of my changes.

Hopefully someone out there has dealt with this before. I searched but was unable to find anything on my specific issue.

    Thanks!
