Problem with site rapidly losing traffic and ranking

    Hello DP community,

Our site is not very old (about a year), and we have been doing very well in Google SERPs for some quite competitive keywords. Our site ( http://www.sgrada.com/ ) is written in the Bulgarian language and mainly contains news in the areas of interior design and architecture. It also contains a large (perhaps the largest) catalogue of local (for Bulgaria) companies, who provide planning, building and (garden, exterior, interior) design.

We had a page Rank of 5 for maybe 2 to 3 months AND a steady flow of visitors (~1600 unique per day, increasing to over 2,5k in mid-February). Our visitors had begun to drop slowly (18-25 Feb.), but from the 8th of March the number of visitors dropped DRASTICALLY, which is not uncommon for our site for 2 or 3 weekdays, but problem is: this time the stats never went above 700 unique visits per day again. And, PageRank, if it's that relevant at all, dropped to 3 (from 5!) for one single day.

Here's a link to an image with data from Google Analytics to illustrate the numbers: sgan.notlong.com

A few words about what SEO has been done so far:
    1. Proactive link building - almost none. The company I'm working at insist on the principle "Content is King" and has a dedicated team of editors to translate, find images or illustrations and put together the news on the site. Best quality check - when I open the site (and am not working on it at the time :D) I often find myself surfing the news, because almost everything is very intriguing and new as in "never thought it could exist".

    2. We have been linked by some high-PR news sites and some of the biggest news portals in the country, when they use our material.

    3. Outdoor advertising - none (beyond telling acquaintances and colleagues).

    4. Internal optimization. Site is (I think) structured well, we rarely receive questions about navigation from our users and almost never - complaints that a page does not open or lead where it is expected to. From all the 5k+ news pages and company information catalogue pages there are only 88 duplicate meta description tags and only 62 duplicate titles.

    5. It should be noted we moved hosting in the beginning of the year 2008. There was some kind of misconfiguration leading to our IP 91.196.127.61 being indexed instead of our domain name. This has however, NOT led to any drop in traffic to my knowledge.
Non-www is 301-ed to www-version, direct access by IP is 301-ed to the www-version as well. (Google now shows the correct domain).

    6. Misc:

Unreachable URLs: (all in all 6, and no main pages are affected), for example:
    <news_article> Network unreachable
    PHP:
We are also serving a few selected banners on our site, uploaded by us and controlled through the popular exchange.bg ad network (popular in Bulgaria, I mean).

Also, no black-hat, grey-hat (or even not many white-hat for that matter) SEO techniques have ever been used on the site.

Now, question is: Have we been penalized by Google? Or do we have some other SEO problem that needs to be taken care of? Could we have been sandboxed due to old backlinks or whatever the current popular sandbox theory is?

It is definitely discouraging to put so much effort to make so good content and then not be reached by people. Also, we know that the site can be optimized better, but an graphical overhaul and addition of many new features are planned in the coming months.

Thanks to the community for answering this post!
Great thanks in advance to all readers for the attention.
