Problem with Layers in IE. Please Help

I have built a website in the Joomla CMS and I have recently added a slideshow component to the front page. In Firefox, this displays fine but in IE, the drop down menu above drops down behind the slideshow.

I have limited knowledge of CSS but I've set the z-index of the menu to 1000 and the z-index of the content div to 1 and tried the position:relative and position:absolute but neither worked (although one, not remembering which, moved the slideshow off the page.
