Problem with htaccess, need help please

I am building a new site on pets with the following in mind:

1. Have categories (eg cats, dogs, rabbits etc)
2. Have friendly URLS for articles on the site (eg mysite.com/cats/my-cute-title-cat/
3. If a user types in mysite.com/cats, he should see a list of articles within that category.

I have set up the database with tables for the categories and everything else. I've got a script list_articles.php which given the name of the category will display all articles within that category but i am not sure what to put in the htacess file. My attempt is as follows:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/$
RewriteRule ^cats/(.+)$ cats/$1/ [R=301,NC,L]
RewriteRule ^cats/(.+)/ show_article.php?p=$1&c=cats [NC,L]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/$
RewriteRule ^dogs/(.+)$ dogs/$1/ [R=301,NC,L]
RewriteRule ^dogs/(.+)/ show_article.php?p=$1&c=dogs [NC,L]

The above displays the article correctly but when a user arrives at mysite.com/cats, i want to show a list of articles within the "cats" category as well.

Can anybody help please?
