Most analytics tools calculate time spent on a page by calculating the difference between when it's first loaded and when you then move on to load the next page.

All good, except when a visitor loads a page ... and never moves on to another second page on your site. Most typically, they've left your site after loading one and only one page. In these cases, most tools report a visit duration of 0 seconds.

If you're seeing this with 90% of your visitors, you might want to focus on your home page "bounce" rate -- % of home page visitors who abandon your site and fail to move past this first page ;)
