Problem in calculating back links

I would appreciate some comments on this.

I have a site. Have about 15 links. I have an automated link manager and it checks the back links and confirms the same. Just to be sure, I did the check myself.

But in the Digital Point backlink section, I notice that the number of backlinks is just 8. How could this be possible?

Also, I have a few other questions.

    1. How long does it take in getting a PR3 from PR0? (it took me about 2 weeks of dedicated effort)

    2. I have about 8 backlinks (as shown in the report, while the actual number of backlinks are actually 15) and my PR is 3. One of my competitors has about 37 backlinks and has a PR5. Which of us 2 would be performing better according to you and why?

Ok. Now a trivia.. clikz.com enjoys 97,700 backlinks. Any guesses on how long it would take to get there?

    Cheers!

I'm relatively new to all of this but I have learned that Google (which is used for the DP backlink tool) is very conservative in reporting links. MSN and Alta Vista are more complete in this regard. If you do an inquiry on these sites you'll likely see all 15 of your links. Here's a free download tool that does a great job of tracking links for your site (and your competitors) accross the different search engines.

I think the timing of going from a PR0 to PR3 depends mostly on the timing of Google's update. If you got there in two weeks, you probably had lucky timing.

Prominds, you are lucky you have that many backlinks - I have been ACTIVELY working on my links the past few months, and have more than 400 linking into my page, but Google is only showing 40.

    checkout www.sabreakaway.co.za

ANYONE who will be able to help us out with this? I don't want to waste my time to get backlinks if Google picks up only 10% of them.

    Thanks!

Don't worry about google showing 10%. they know about the rest of 90% links but don't showing them up. Just keep developing the links.

They only show me with 40+ though there are over 3000 with them, will they ever catch up? Do they just show link over a certain PR, just a thought :)

As the others have said, don't fret over the amount showing in Google. They only show a cross section of the links. Not sure if PR is what causes it either. For instance, they've indexed 150,000 pages on our site - ALL with a backlink to the front page; this theoretically means they would have already found 150,000+ backlinks - and yet they only report 4000 of them. It's meaningless basically.

    Now, for your other questions.

    1. Getting a PR is not a time related thing. For one, Google only seems to update their 'toolbar PR' every few months at the moment, so if you start building links just after an update, nothing will happen at least for a few months. The value of your PR is based on the PR of the incoming links (and how many links they have on their page) and so theoretically, you could get a PR9 after two weeks if you're fortunate enough to have a link from a PR10 page and have the update take place at a convenient time. More important than the PR displayed though, is the effect you are seeing on your rankings. There is a theory that Google actually updates tehir PR much more frequently and just doesn't bother showing us.. I kind of agree, as I've often seen large jumps in rankings, but no change in PR (and similarly; drops in PR with no effect whatsoever on rankings)

    2. All that matters is how many visits you are getting. You should be asking yourself; "Who ranks higher for the money search terms?". Higher PR and higher backlinks are only a means to an end. Even the ranking is secondary to how many visits it generates - someone in 2nd place could get more visits if their description and title are more appealing. From the information given, I can't tell you who is doing better.. could be either of you.

How long did it take Clickz? Who knows? Don't really care to be honest -- chances are a lot of them are internal backlinks anyway.
