I'm seeking recommendations and would like to know about your experiences. I cannot find anybody to help me complete a site. Everybody that contacts me is a scammer with sketchy portfolios.

I'm posting in multiple forums and even more.

What is the best way for me to find some good help to complete a website project?

It depends on your project, your budget, and other circumstances. For instance, if you are starting a business website and know nothing of the process, talking with a local company will give you in-person feedback and some security. If it's just a "play" site, you might have a friend who could help who you didn't even think of. If the site isn't going to be complex, you could easily learn the basics.

In any case, I suggest knowing some of the "jargon" before getting in too far and know what questions to ask. You want to see the person's previous work. Is their code standards compliant? Do they have the sense of style you like (such as minimalistic vs. visualistic)? What are the costs up front and what does that get you? How would you make minor changes? etc.

"Everybody that contacts me is a scammer with sketchy portfolios."

Well I responded to one of your post, so that puts me in with everybody. So am I a scammer or do I have sketchy portfolio?

Most of my work comes from my local area. Most of my clients are business people that have spent large amounts of time and money, and ended up with crappy websites that do not work. I don't advertise, my customers talk to other people, and they come to me.

Why? because my customers are very happy with my work. They trust me. They have websites that work for them, for a lot less than they they had spent with other web developers. Maybe your post has nothing to with me, but if you are calling me a scammer based on the other post, then I'm sorry your the scammer. Free or low cost MLS database intergration does not exist.
There are services that will add MLS property search to your website for a monthly fee. If you are unwilling to pay a programmer to do it, then you only have 2 choices.

Service, or crack the books and do it yourself.

Took me 3 weeks to do my first one.
