What's a backlink? And what does it mean to "bookmark?" I know what it means to bookmark in my own web browser, but I'm not sure what it has to do with links.

don't be mean, nothing wrong with getting a more thorough explanation. and I am sure searching for "backlinks" turns up alot of results but yes, he got it right it just means a link on another site directed towards you. Usually, backlinks will also increase pr. and a bookmark is just someone that has bookmarked your site for later that is good, because then they keep coming back
I think he said he was building links not back links. To be all honest it wasn't that unusual to not know what a back link was. Have you tried to search for one thing on the search? It is near impossible to find an answer like this on DP search. Bookmarking is referring to adding your site to many of the various networking sites such as digg, stumble upon, Technorati, and many more. As far as back links, cianuro answered that for you.
