Just wondering if anyone is bothering with the .PRO extension which became available for registration under less restrictive terms at 12 o'clock Eastern Time today (Monday 8th September)?

You can read about it on the .pro registry here: http://www.registrypro.pro/
There is a link on the left hand side for a list of registrars.
There are still some restrictions. Basically you must be a member of a professional organisation/accredited body. I gor 4 registered yesterday. I think they were $29 each for the year.

When initially launched, there was a long list of restrictions on who can purchase .pro domains and therefore the total sale never crossed the limit of 6000. Now after a complete failure, they have eased these restrictions but it is too late. People are busy with new extensions such as .me, which has got some real potential.

Professionals (the real target of .pro) are least interested in these dot pros, as they are content with their names dot com. Sad but true, dot pro domains never exchanged hands and since inception have remained in the burnt hands of domainers, idle and dusted.

The danger with .pro is that your competitors can challenge your eligibility and the domain can be taken from you. Unless you are a licensed doctor, lawyer, accountant, or similar you run that risk. IE: if you had webmaster.pro or seo.pro or pornstar.pro you could be challenged.

    http://registrypro.pro/nextphase/tou.htm

"you agree that you are a person or entity who provides professional services and has been admitted to or licensed by, and is in good standing with, a government certification body or jurisdictional licensing entity recognized by a governmental body, which body requires that its members be licensed or admitted to a certifying or licensing entity and regularly verifies the accuracy of its data."

I was dissapointed that three letter domains are not allowed like seo.pro. I tried fix.pro, the registrar took the order and then got a mail back saying that it was too short. They need a minimum of 4 characters.

Maybe price is in your range but not good for investment purposes both short and long term.
The price of domains (in the secondary market) increases when there is huge demand of any particular extension
among the general IT community (beyond domainers).
Unfortunately, the registry of .pro took every single measure possible to make this
extension least popular among domainers let alone general public.
