Private Registration with regards to SEO

I have one sizable online business with decent and growing pagerank. When we bought the url for that business, we did not know it was under penalty with Google for spamming. It sat fro what seemed like forever with no indexing and no pagerank. We enlisted a private SEO guy and he changed a few things and got it going. One of the things he said is DO NOT use private registration. When we undid the private registration(major pain in the a$$) and re-pinged google, and asked for re-consideration, the indexing shot off like a rocket.

My question is,"is anonymity important in affiliate work". Now that I have a number of my own sites starting, why would I want to use private registration. I have a business address to use. But someone could still find me through llc listings.

Google might be crawling the whois data so there could be some SEO advantage.

private whois is sometimes for preventing any spam, correct? then why google should punish them?
