Anybody can recommend a lawyer who deals with privacy issues. A financial institute sent an email with details of my account to a third party, which is outrageous, and I am looking for a lawyer who can give me and advice in regards to this issue. Thank you.
What's wrong with that? Sure, you can argue that it's unethical in today's Internet business world, but in the USA, there's no law against it. Perhaps if the 3rd party was unrelated AND they gave them your SS# or CC#, you have a complaint. Companies sell names, addresses, emails and customer data all day long.
It is actually worse than the giving my SSN, it was giving away the balance on my account and some other transaction info. Maybe it is ok with you, but I don't like other people to know what I have in my account. Other than that, I signed an agreement with them where they explicitly guarantee not to disclose any information related to my account to third parties. So it is not simply a federal law it is a breach of my agreement with them.
I was not saying it's ok with me, because it's not. Just making a point that it's not necessarily a case. If you have an agreement that says, verbatim, "we won't disclose ANY information to any third party" AND the party they disclosed it to is not connected with the company, you have a civil case. However, if the company is connected to the company somehow, that company may no be considered a 3rd party. Read the agreement closely. There might be a line in there about how you are releasing info to them, their affiliates, holdings, etc. You can find tons of local lawyers by opening a phone book. Just remember, you will be the one paying for it until a judgement comes down. If it's in your favor. Also, you won't walk out and collect a check. They will stall. If you go to small claims, it's cheaper, but your judgement potential is capped and you must represent yourself. *I'm not a lawyer nor am I giving legal advise. Just chatting.*
