I have an HP printer with 2MB on board ram that can be extended to 48MB. I am wondering in what cases the memory upgrade would be recommended? Will it increase printout speed for 2MB+ printing jobs?

It would be for storing more jobs, if you just use it for personal use, no need ot upgrade the memory.

yes i agree with zulan if you use your printer for personal use, no need to upgrade the memory and upgrade is required when you have shared your printer with multiple computers.

well when I am printing a large document I think it prints one page than waits, prints one page than waits, prints one page than waits...
I am not sure if it a lack of memory or slowness of the interface (I am using usb-to-parallel converter)
