Pricing

For awhile now, I have been trying to discover the best way to charge my clients for web design work. Besides designing the initial website, I know you have to consider the domain registration fee, the hosting fees and the annual maintenance fees. How do other businesses handle this? Do you combine all the fees into one lump sum and charge the client annually or quarterly? I can also see charging the client right away on an hourly rate when he/she has requested 2 hours of updates on the site. Also, can anyone give me a round-about price for charging hosting fees? Or even better if anyone happens to know what is the proper way for figuring out the price to charge for hosting? And lastly, should we include tax with web design work? Any helpful responses to this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I charge a monthly fee for minor stuff like adding text and stuff. If they want any graphic, layout changes, or coding, I charge by the hour.

You need to check your local laws about tax as they vary from state to state.

I don't really have any clients that I do ongoing work for. However, I do try to get them to purchase their own domain name from godaddy and purchase hosting from my web hosting company (TravSolutions.com). I prefer that they register their own domain as I don't want to be responsible for contacting them when it is time for them to renew it or anything like that. I try to be upfront and just tell them that basically the price I gave you only includes the services I am providing, and that they will have the fees for the domain and hosting also on top of that whether they go with my company or not.
