Price Suggestions for a Free Forum

I was wondering how many admins' on here use google adwords. I have watched some other roleplay forums on here like "onrpg.com" and "Roleplayer Guild" , they both seem to use some sort of paid advertising to increase traffic to their boards. Sometimes I see an advertisement for "onrpg.com", on the google advertisement banner on my forum. I did indeed pay the google adwords page a visit, and I'm still a little bit confused on how much something like that could cost a month. I am on a tight budget but my forum is extremely important to me, so I'm willing to pay at least $100 dollars a month to increase my forums activity. I work crazy hours now, and I can't really advertise for free anymore.

I subscribed my forum to Google Analytics and I know you can set your own budget. I was wondering how effective would keywords like "roleplay, roleplaying, etc" would be for my roleplaying forum. And is google adwords strictly for online businesses ? Or is it a common tool for a free forum obssessed junkie like me ? I've been with my forum for over a year now and I'm very dedicated and serious about it. Seeing it become more active is a very strong passion for me. So if anyone on here could help me decide on a effective price or at least share a personal experience with Google Adwords , I would greatly appreciate it.

If you get creative you can use AdWords and the Google content network to get some cheap clicks. Try to find low competition keywords in the Google keyword tool. I would try and build up your forum to have some posts before you send ppc traffic. That will make the forum a bit sticky.

I use adwords to advertise my forum. I have different campaigns running in both google search and content network and this cost me approximately 6 Euros per day. I'm not sure if I will continue the Google search campaigns as they became very expensive lately.

It works okay for my new forum as I dont have a lot of natural search visitors yet. I have around 10 new members per day from adwords.

Your best bet on a string budget is to use placement on sites that you think are particularly relevant yo your site. IE. Look at your member base. What other sites are they members of? See if those sites have Google Ads and if so you need to be spending your money there.

Notice the google ads in this forum? People can elect for their ads to be shown specifically in these forums. So some who offers seo services will show up in seo related threads on this forum where seo people like to hang out.

You will be fine with a $100 p month budget.

If for some strange reason I don't get one hundred dollars worth of clicks in one month, does it carry over to the next month?

Thanks to everyone for helping me so far. :)

Of course it does carry over to the next month.

Make sure you get the most out of the content network and try to work with placements as well. In general, the content network will cost less per click than the search network.

One tip: use different ad groups (or even campaigns) for the content and the search network. They absolutely perform much different from each other.

I got a Starter Edition ad. I suppose it's a much more simplified version of google adwords. There is no banner options as far as I can see. Just a simple text add, with two lines limited to 35 words each. Then of course I added in 20 keywords related closely to my site. The tutorial pretty much focuses on Keywords, Ad Text and budget.

What's the difference between Adsense and Adwords ? Is Adsense a lot more expensive ?

LOL. Adsense is for website publishers wheras Adwords is for advertisers. Adwords customers pay google per click wheras Adsense users receive money for each click generated from their site. Pretty much adwords gives a vut of each click value to publishers who put Google ads on their website.

So like I said, I chose to go with the starter edition account. The only problem is I got my account on October 7th, and I haven't got any impressions for my ad yet. I picked 75 keywords to describe my forum, they are the best descriptive keywords that I can think of.

Does it usually take this long before your ad starts to circulate and gain exposure ?

When you start up a google adwords account, you can get the regular addition or a starter edition. Starter edition is like a basic account for beginners.

But the problem is that my ad isn't being shown. I used really descriptive keywords that other roleplay forums use. I don't know what's going on.

Like SEO houston was saying, you just have to do your keyword research to be able to find keywords (that deliver) that are also not very expensive.

You'll be able to add quite a few users to your forum with $100 a month.

But you need some SEO to get you the natural clicks that would really see your forum grow.

I got a "adwords account". This is the message they give me for my keywords:

I'm going to research how much it costs to hire a SEO. If it will help my forum double in size, it'll be worth the money.
