Preventing people from stealing your photo's?

Is there a way so that you can't right click on a photo. A warning pops up and says you can't copy this (Can't save it on your hard drive)? I have seen this on other websites but do not know what code I need or how to implement it.

those IE no right click scripts don't do squat.
i can view your source and find the image that way, and
FF allows you too right click on an image and view it.

watermark them if you want to protect them.

That won't work either. If the image can be displayed in your browser, it's physically in the browser cache on the site visitor's computer. Once it's there, he has it.

As sawz said, if you want to protect an image, watermark it. And do it in such a way that the watermark cannot be easily cropped out.

I think it might do some good for the "average websurfer" who does not know about source code and cache. If they try to right click the image and a popup says they can't copy it..chances are they won't know how to (unless they are web savvy).

If you have some 'serious' images that you really wish to display but at the same time protect, you might want to consider utilizing steganography. Simply put, this is a technique, using a simple-to-use application, to embed a file (any file), e.g., a .txt file into an image.

I've used the technique and it works well. If a copyright issue comes up and your original image is discovered residing on someone elses web site, it's truly hard to dispute when the image is shown to contain an actual notepad .txt file with your copyright info on it!

Take a look at this link for further information.....;)

Guys, i really dont think you should put any script like this one in your site, It is really piss off. When i get to a site and see one of those scripts in it , i get out of it immediatly. it's just show's how not-proffesional that site is.

If you want people not to steal your pictures - just write it on the site, im sure people will understand you ;) .

some no right click scripts will close your browser, hows that for pissing off your visitors.

And you still have prevented anyone from saving your image to their personal hard drives anyway...

Not looking to piss my visitors off. Here is the situation. My members have posted images in threads on my forum. And it has come to my attention that one or two moderators from a COMPETITORS Forum have been stealing images from the threads and then these moderators post the same pictures on their forum without giving credit. It's not just one or two images but a whole bunch!

Well, I understand your distress but all you are doing with anti-right click solutions is slowing down those determined to steal your images and potentially inconveniencing your honest members/visitors.

A better solution is, as stated earlier, a watermarking solution. Try this:

I've seen some websites restrict access to images - say if you hotlink the image from your own blog, the image will say "No hotlinking"...

I wonder hot they do this?

I have a script in the Cpanel that says no hotlinking, and does not provide any foreign link connecting to your site. Not sure if all of us have it.

That's an option in cPanel and other server control panels. All it does is prevent direct links to images on your server - i.e., let's say I wanted to use one of your images as a logo on my site and instead of downloading it and putting it on my server, I just link to the version on your server, so that every time my page loads it grabs the image from you, using your bandwidth and disk space. Anti-hotlinking prevents that. Unfortunately, it can also mess up the display of those images on other folders on your domain.

However, this has nothing to do with whether or not someone can download/steal your images.

If you put your image online, there will always be some way that someone can save it. You are best off watermarking the images.
