Press releases work better to gain a burst of traffic than as a way to gain links. Not many press releases remain on the sites (other than the distribution sites) for more than a short time. But for that time you normally get a nice hit of traffic. Important that you write a good release and not just an advertisement. I've seen people put thier release on this forum and have others critic a little before they put it out, that is probably a good idea. I have a list of sites and some info on how to write releases on my site Free Press release sites, if you want to check it out.
Press releases are objective write-ups that are submitted to newswires like www.prweb.com . The idea is born from the fact that quite a number of webmasters and print publishers are actually looking for newsworthy items. They search newswires for news pieces that may be relevant to the niche they are serving. And if they find your press release? They will publish it! This can only mean exposure for the link you have mentioned therein, either in other websites or in print publications. There may be similiarities between press release peddling and article marketing, but press releases and articles are two different things. Press releases are usually 300 to 750 words in length. They answer the 5 basic questions of a newsworthy event: Who? What? When? Where? Why? But you're just a simple webmaster, you say? What possible newsworthy event can you write about with regards to your online cash cow? Tell the world about the launch of your website. Inform them of a new, unconventional feature you are adding to your web pages. Be the first to announce a breakthrough in your niche, as reported in your virtual domain. The important thing is to write a piece that is objective, non-promotional, and hype-free.
