We are thinking about doing a press release. Is this a good way to get traffic to a new site? Is there one pr site that would be better than another for the release?

    Thanks

Yes, you can get traffic from PR. You have to create quality content and submit it one a few week

You can get great traffic from a press release. I am assuming this is for your forum site I have open in another tab that I'll reply too soon:). The only biggest thing I see for press releases that you want to be sure of before you do is are you prepared.

You will want to be able to handle a spike in traffic (talk w/ your hosting provider maybe depending, I use blogspot so I can get all the traffic I want:)).

After this, you will want to make sure you have quality content. Press Releases have potential so you will want your website to look nice so people will spread it. Make sure you have quality content and when your visitors land at your home page their led exactly where you want them to go.

Using press release is a great way to get traffic to a new website. I would hire someone to do this instead of trying to do it yourself. I agree with @cameronpalte too. Make sure your site can handle the spike in traffic and that your site gives your visitor a reason to stay and browse your site once they get there. Even better is to have some way to capture your visitor's email address by offering a free report or ebook. That way, all the traffic that the press release generated won't go to waste.
