You have the opportunity to get more PR if you'll tie your product or offer into current news, especially hot news. The news media is always looking for different angles on a story - and if you can provide that with your product, you have a better in. Same with holidays. If your product is attached to a Holiday (or can be), then you have the opportunity for regular PR each year, around that holiday.

For it to become NEWS, it has to be unique, different, etc. The news media doesn't want to give you "free advertising" for your product. They want to report on something entertaining, unique, interesting for their viewers. If you'll give them a cool story to report on, they'll give you some publicity. But just announcing a new product rarely works, unless it's a powerful new product.

I also realized that I could "write" the news myself. Instead of asking magazines to write about me, I'd write about something in the industry - and then send the article to the magazine. They'd get a free article written from an expert - and they'd allow me to include my photo, bio of myself, and information about my product (today, a link to my website). So now I'm able to get full-page and multi-page articles in magazines, at no charge - which again is free PR.

Thanks for this post! This is a tip I will certainly use! I have tried a few pr's but I really like the idea of trying to relate it to current headlines/events. Thanks!
