I searched for a domain name and to my surprise it was available but as a "premium domain" for around $2000. However, all other versions were available as a normal purchase. I could buy a .net for $7... Does this mean the domain really isn't valuable as purely a name itself anymore than the .com registrator appraises it? It wasn't for a product or anything. Simply a two word phrase. My theory is if the .com is a premium domain for $2000 why not buy .net and sell for less. Then again if someone ever even wanted it they would have just bought the .net instead for $7... It seems really foolish to be honest. The keyword only shows around 3K monthly searches.
It depends on the owner of the domain, if they think it's worth $2k, that's their choice but of course .com is superior compare to other TLD. Plus, maybe that 2 words phrase are brandable for something else that could potentially worth more in the future. If you have plenty of time, you should buy the .net and do the SEO for it. You'll get a headstart to get the domain rank higher than the .com.
To me this does seem foolish. Either foolish or the domain name has little to no value if all other extensions are still open. If it were me, I probably would not even buy the .net extension knowing the domains have little or no value. Unless you are using the domain to rank for the words or phrase, I would just go with the .net because it is easy to tell the difference between the .com extension.
That's the reason that .COMs are so valuable, and will usually be priced 10 to 30 times higher than a .NET or a .ORG. If you build up a brand on the .NET, which you can register for $10, eventually more and more people will start typing in the .COM by accident, bringing the holder of the .COM free visitors and advertising revenues. Still there's nothing wrong with starting with a .NET, and trying to buy the .COM later on when you have more income. However, the more famous you become, the higher the price will go for the premium domain too. I knew someone who started an ecommerce site, and the domain he wanted wasn't available, so he used the name + store.COM. 5 years later, after he build up the store to be very be very well known, he finally bought the name he wanted, for $50,000.
Domains in .com with all other available extensions constantly sell. Most businesses couldn't care less if the other extensions were taken by other people because the .com is where everyone would be looking for them anyways. .com's can sometimes even sell for tens of thousands of dollars without other extensions taken, and in most cases it doesn't really boost the value of the other extensions because those cases are usually brandable domains and brandable domains in non .com extensions are generally worthless unless they are popular search phrases. Also, just because it's not a generic product or service doesn't mean the name isn't valuable. Brandable phrase domains that have a slogan quality to them can sell for quite a lot (AllYouNeed.com recently sold for $40,000 as an example).
