    Hi,

some say that now it is obligatory to set preferred or canonical domain with or without www to avoid Google penalization for content duplication as www and non-www domain is treated as two different websites. The question is do you use preferred domain and how your ranking changes?

ok another question how to properly set 301 redirect through Google webmaster if I set preferred domain?

You have to set the 301 redirect in your htaccess code or page code.

It doesn't matter too much which format you use, but I suggest you use whichever will result in the fewest redirects. A redirect loses a bit of link juice. So if you have more links without the www, then use that version and vice versa. The length of your domain name may play into your decision too.

I agree. If your domain name is a bit long then I suggest skip the WWW. The domain names in the SERPs are limited to a certain number of characters (I think less than a 100) so you would want a short domain name.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

Yes it might give rise to duplication issues. 301 redirect is a good solution that I know of. And preferred domain without www is also better as it is easy for people enter in the browser.
