Pre shopping domain(s) research - what, how and where?

Before I go out and spend money on domains I thought it would be an good idea to do some research on them. The thing is, I have no idea how and what exactly I should look for. Of course I want a domain that is not already "banned" by any search engines ect. That is considered old, and perhaps has backlinks to it. Maybe check if it has any ranking to it? Am I missing something here?

Are there any free or cheap tools I can use to check the history on a particular domain?
Whats a good place to buy and sell domains?
Let's say I bought a domain along my hosting provider, would it be possible for me to sell it on a different place?
If there's anything else I should know, please shoot!

    Thanks in advance

Are you looking to buy domains for investment/trading or are you looking to buy for development?

You mentioned your looking for aged domains & perhaps for backlinks, why it that? If you're looking for resale, aged domains don't really give you that much extra to the domain price, it would only give a bit extra to it. What really matters is the quality of the name together with the quality of the extention.

Before spending any money, I would suggest spending about 1 month reading all you can about what makes a name valuable & also have a look at the past sales. Learn all you can them take it very slowly, don't rush out.

Right now I'm looking to buy domain for development, I just asked in-case I get into reselling in the future.

I'm sure I read somewhere that aged domains with backlinks to it was something I should look for when buying one; and to me that made sense. I'll just focus on getting a quality domain name for now, thanks for clearing that up.

As I mentioned before I don't want a domain that has bad history of any kind. Are there any tools I can use to look that up? Thanks

yes, use GOOGLE to see what people are saying about that URL.
use the YAHOO link: operator to see if it has inbound links.

aged domains and backlinks both can help a site but there are also a thousand other factors such as choosing an appropriate brandable name that are also important so consider some new names too.
