Spending hours and hours behind the computer manually submitting to thousands upon thousands of directories, your hand eventually starts to hurt.

and posting on the forum, building content, etc. All manual labor. :D

I think you need to aim for quality links now. Also, domain trust/authority may be a big factor.

There are websites out there with zero backlinks that will rank higher than pages with multiple backlinks. Do a search for usernames... you see wikipedia profiles and such pop up high in the SERPs.

The highest PR page on my personal website has PR3 with 1 backlink, while my home page have 1000+ backlinks (I have link 1000+ posts on one forum) yet it has lower PR.

I think you really need quality links to get higher; because any spammer can easily get 1000s of low quality links. I suspect there is a certain point where low quality links just won't help you anymore.

It's difficult getting higher PR backlinks, I mean no one really has a list that says hey these are high PR sites.

What's the point of having a high PR site when you don't get much traffic?

Well who said high PR was easy? ;)

    http://www.search-marketing.info/newsletter/articles/david-naylor.htm

    Some ideas:
    - Get a favour from a webmaster who owns a high PR website.
    - Sometimes it doesn't hurt to ask? / There might be certain ways to ask.
    - Linkbait
    - Good content
    - There are actually some high PR blogs / comment websites. PR3/4
    - Widgets (? I'm not sure of their effectiveness; it does work in SEO contests)

    Blackhat:
    - Buy high PR websites? (I'm not sure how people do this, but I've seen link farms with bought websites. e.g. fqas2004.com was sold on digital point.)
    - Hack/exploit a website. Unethical of course.
    - There are actually some high PR blogs / comment websites. PR3/4
    - Buy links from relevant websites.

Linkbait / content that people link to is probably your best bet in the long term.

In my opinion blogs dont count a lot these times. There are people with over 10.000 comments in blogs and the page is not on top of google search.

Currently its hard to find the right way to get a better position / ranking at all
