    You're right - it's farcical.
How can they justify my personal blog remaining PR4, yet some sites with twice as many backlinks now only being a PR2 or PR3?
They can't is the answer - they've just slapped some of us to remind us who's boss. And I don't like their arrogance one bit.

It is kind of funny... I started two sites on the same day and listed both of them in the same free directories. Both are now pr 3. One site has only 400 backlinks from free directories while the other has those same directory listings plus 6700 other backlinks.

I'm not complaining, but it does show that pr is not a perfect measurement of a sites worth.

I have to agree that there are some very strange PR changes that defy any logic ... and its nothing to do with paid links. I have one website that has gone from a pr4 to pr3 despite more link development and "no link purchases". There is another site that I put up for an experiment, it was a pr2 for the last year, now it is a pr3, and more unbelievable, the 'disclaimer' page that has about 50 words on it went to a pr4.

I think that google in trying to imrpove the algo to defeat paid links etc has created a lot of anomalies, may be too many to leave it as it is for the next few months. My guess is that we will see another pr update in the not too distant future to fix some of the issues.

In spite of considerable efforts, all except one of my sites have stayed at the same PR. This is like running furiously to stay at the same place.

Just to put some more meat on the fire..
Many of my inner pages got some PR.
My links section (free, no paid link, not even reciprocal) was PR3, now is unranked.
Homepage was and still is PR3 even if backlinks went from 600 to 2600 with some very good related sites too.
My stumblepon page got PR3 with 125 backlinks.
Hard to find any logic in it so I just did the only right thing: I removed the google toolbar LOL

In the end the question is whether the new algorithm changes/updates have a positive effect on consumer search. If people have more relevant search results because of all of this then Google will stay king.

If they are messing around, policing paid links and actually lowering the quality of results & relevant pages then maybe Google is too big for it's own good and things are on their way down...

has anyone thought that maybe they changed their algorithm?

Maybe it's not just the sheer number of backlinks, but rather the quality of backlinks.

People think that submitting to 5000 directories of PR3+ will help. No it won't. Why? Because these directories only really seem to have PR for the main page, not for the subpages where your link resides.

Got a few links on PR4 and 5 blogs/sites? Nice. Thats a good backlink. If you have a site with only 20 backlinks, and 18 of them are PR3-6, then surely thats better than a site with 8000 backlinks, with only 10-20 that are PR3-6?

Its like a kill/death ratio in online gaming. If you have 500 kills it sounds great, but not if you've died 4000 times. If you have 200 kills and only 40 deaths, that makes you a better quality player.
