The biggest challenge with a press release is to pack the marketing message in a newsy style.

As for the pr websites I use these are:
    prweb.com
    pr.com
    prleap.com

Those sites alone should ensure that the release is indexed by Google News. To increase the effect of a release though, the best approach is to build a contact list of editors (browse online newspapers and harvest editor emails), the impact will be much higher this way. With a press release covering a gambling site I had the surprise of seeing the release appear on the first two most important sites covering this segment.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards, George

I have some general tips as well as both an offline and online distribution-oriented press release template available for free from the link in my sig, as well as several other articles on the subject.

The best way to distribute your release for coverage is to do so manually. However, that's not realistic in a cost perspective for most webmasters, so the primary thing you should do is email your release (free) to the appropriate editor or bureau of the Associated Press. Getting picked up there will do more than paying huge fees just to compete with a lot of the garbage posted to the more popular distribution sites. Always go directly to a real newswire when possible.

If you're simply looking to get into places like Google news, www.PR.com will do that for you for free and usually w/in a day of it posting. www.PRleap.com will do the same for many release, but not guaranteed for all. To get into Yahoo! News and other distribution outlets, you'll generally need to upgrade on a general distribution site if you don't get picked up by AP.

hi jhmattern, you seem to be pretty knowledgeable about Press Releases and you just mentioned the AP, so I thought I'd ask you this.

How do you find out the contact details of a relevant person to your field at the AP, to sound them out about maybe covering your story/release?

I looked at their site but the contacts they have on their are quite general. I have seen the same AP author names cropping up a few times in AP pieces about my field on the net, but I can't find out the contact details for these people.

What would you suggest? And do you think the AP are likely to do a story if you approach them, or is that bad form? (OF course I know it has to be newsworthy).

I can't make any kind of call on whether the AP would pick up your story. It depends on exactly what the news is, how well the release is written, and whether or not you send it to the appropriate person or bureau.

You can find the contact info for regional bureaus through the contact page. I believe there's a drop down box there. In another dropdown box is a list of the beats, editors, and writers. Just find the right person, and there should be a fax number to reach them. If you have to, call the bureau office and ask for more specific contact information if you don't see something available.

I see the Bureaus for the American states on the contact page, but my field is international, and it doesn't fit in an of the beat/editors/writers areas listed.

On the AP International page there is one number in New York. Maybe I should just call that. Is there no other way to get in contact with the AP writers that I see on AP articles related to my field but are not listed on the AP site? Or am I asking you an impossible question - i.e. I should just call their International office in New York and inquire?

    Thanks.

That's your best bet. You'll want to develop relationships with them over time, but in the beginning, just call and ask who to contact, or how to contact them if you have the name already. My best guess is if there's no one covering that beat for them internationally, they may just have you email it to their general submission address. They might have someone they can let you talk to directly in the office though. If they do, be sure to take note of their name, and ask for a direct email address or fax number, and address future releases to them if you have some success with them. :)

If you use PRweb.com (recommended), you'll get the impression from their website that you have to upgrade to $200 in order to have text links in the body of the release.

I emailed them and asked about it once, and they said they'll honor hyperlinks in the body at the $80 level. You just have to spread them out by 100 words or so, and they have a unique hyperlink format that's explained on the submission form.

You can see the potential value of having those links in your release's body. If a bunch of sites publish the release, they'll also be publishing the links. If they archive the release permanently ... even better!

    Good luck.
