PR higher on sub page, than main page

    Hey chaps

While since I've been here, but this one has me baffled.

Recently for one of our main keyphrases we were ranking higher for a subpage than we were the main page.

I've just noticed now that subpage is PR 5 (its the only one on our site with this PR). The main page is PR4.

    Is this a glitch?

It's not necessarily a glitch. One possibility is that the inner page has some high-quality links to it, thus raising its PR.

    I totally agree with Jim.

Your sub-page might have got more inbound links due to its quality than the main page.

    I saw a site having a PR0 home-page and PR7 for a sub-page that was dugged over 1K and reddit had around 700 reviews.:)

    Cheers guys.

    That's what I suspected.

That specific page has some very nice links going to it, and has age on its side.

    EDIT, and thats confirmed.

Hey, 8 years in SEO, and I've just learnt something new :)

I am afraid its also a sign that your main page has been penalised - particulary if the main page no longer ranks for anything. Lots of links to a sub page create unnatural linking patterns which can have the effect of negative scoring or completly knocking out the IBLS to the main page. Therefore you may need to re-establish more quality IBLS to your main page.

Google's PR algo's don't think "Hmm, not quite sure if this is unnatural, so I'll kock a point off it" - it's either all or none. In this case, it's all.

No need to worry, my site is PR4, a product range I spent a lot of work linking to to get to the top of the rankings is also PR4 whereas every other page is PR3,2 or 1. As the cookie crumbles, so they say;)

Maybe some of your visitors thought the content on that page was extremely valuable so the linked to it unknowing to you. This can also raise the pr of your inner pages.

I also have been noticing the same. For my finance website, its home page is pr 3 and many of its internal pages has pr 4. It is all due to strong linking for internal pages

I don't think that there is anything to worry about. One of my site's inner page has higher PR than the home page.

At least your homepage has a PR but from my previous post (quoted other's post) the main page has PR0 and the sub pages has PR7 that's quite a gap.

Another thing to also take a look as is your internal site structure. How well linked are each of the pages -within- your site is also a factor.

    Best,
