Yes, you can. You can also get de-indexed.

This is an increasingly common comment here on DP.

It seems that Google are really going for it with their anti-text link crusade.

well you can't get ur pr back till next update. because they dont update their pr DCs too frequently. also more link building can help you.
well, this is my opinion though.

Just FYI- you dont need to necesarilly stop having paid links, Google just wants you to not give them any PR and to also label them as advertisements.

Well, you have the ability to resubmit your site through the Google Webmaster Tools panel, but whether they do or not is at their discretion.

MC seems to be saying on his blog that if you remove the paid links (or make them nofollow) and submit a reinclusion request - you will get back in - at least that's how I read it

I don't think so, you can get it in three days. My blog went from Pr5 to pr3 went back to PR5 in 3 days.

    yes
making links 'no follow' will be okay
but as those links are sell through text-link-ads and they syndicate links using wordpress plug-in,
i can;t make them 'no follow'

This happened to my website. Here's what you do --

Submit reinclusion request and simply tell them you weren't aware of the link selling policy and you have sinced removed the links or added the "no-follow" attribute.

Wait about a week or so and you should see your PR back to what it was before they dropped it. Good luck!
