Over the past week I have been working my way though the free directory links listed here http://www.mr-seo.com/wordpress/?p=155

I have noticed 80% of these sites have a lower PR than listed on the page. I have no idea how old the web page is, however it shows an alarming trend of directories struggling to maintain their ranking. I dont think I have come across one directory that has actually rising in the rankings.

This highlights the difficulties directory owners have maintaining their ranking. One reason could be, a directory owners work very hard to get a high PR, once this is acheived they probably take their foot off the gas, resulting in a ranking drop, another could simply be the owner gives in chasing a high PR.

This shows that paying for a listing could be a pointless exercise when looking for long term benefits.

When car runs on diesel do you test its performance when running on 91 octane petrol, no never as they are not compatible, think about your reference points before you offer opinions

Thats precisely the message google is trying to get through to us. Some people are hard of hearing though. Directory ownwers mostly I suspect. It started with the update before last. Maybe a bit before but thats when I really noticed it.

Free directories are cool if you are looking for serp's. The only question mark is how long? But thats an axe hanging over the entire industry and your high PR authority sites in particular.
