Sorry to start another thread on PR but I have read loads of posts and I think I must be missing something. My understanding is that PR doesnt doesnt put you higher up on the serp's? So whats the point of trying to get a high PR? Other than to be able to sell links on a high PR site? It seems to me like for Google to go to the trouble of creating a system that rates sites and gives sites a PR it must be for Google's benefit, else why would they spend money on creatingit? All they seem to have created is a system that allows people to make money selling high PR links and Google get no money out of it! Doesnt seem good business sense?? What am I missing???????????
PR has some influence but generally it's an indicator of the health of a site. Nothing else. Webmasters use it in the misguided belief that it matters. Ultimately SERPs are what matters - and your content defines your SERPs. Link building is very important and the anchor text is important.
You are missing this... 1. To rank higher for certain phrases you need more links. 2. When you get more links, you get a higher PR as a side-effect/bonus. So normally when you try to rank higher you will also eventually get a higher PR. Turn that around and yuo could argue that the point of higher PR is to rank higher PROVIDED you distribute the anchor text you want to rank higher cleverly. It's like A = B but B != A. More links = better ranking (and higher PR) But Higher PR != Better rankings per se.
Pagerank is just measure of the quality & quantity of links pointing to a page. Most people build those links to get generate traffic and to move up in the SERPs, links are very important to SERPs. So people aren't really chasing PR for the sake of PR, its a sign of underlying qualities a site may have. Personally I think PR is most important if you are selling a site, it can really add value.
Theres no point but people are stupid or noobs or think that pr means traffic bla bla so that's why the crazy let's get higher pr .....
