I was reading where Zango was sued by the government for 3 billion or something like that. Is it illegal if I do black hat ppi. Like, tricking people into downloading a program that has adware in it? What are the consequences. Keep in mind I am only asking after reading another thread on here. I know nothing about this type ofstuff, which is why I am asking. Thanks
Would you get in trouble if you made dummy files that looked like real files, tricking people into downloading them, and then getting payed for that install? If so, how would you get caught, if you had multiple IP addresses? I am sure it is not ethical, but is it legal in the USA?
As far as I know, at least here in Europe, you can't install a software without displaying a disclaimer. I guess the same rule should be applied in US as well. Thus, most of the PPI services are illegal. Regards Thibaut
Zango is not illegal, the user is aware of installing the software. Most of the other "Pay per Install" programs that do not prompt the user are "illegal" and contain harmful code that forces the user to pay the PPI company and send them all their chocolate cookies, now, run, teh FBI is after you!
I think being ethical is more important than the legality of what you do. I for one have downloaded programs that had malware attached and it was a HUGE pain in the ass to get rid off. Basically took me hours of reading forums on that particular virus to figure out how to uninstall. I'm sure that anyone who has had to do that feels the same, or at least most (disclaimer so the computer genius who can read his computer REG like a book doesn't make some lame comment about how it's not a big deal....) Anyways, there are so many better programs around that aren't black hat that I don't know why people would hassle with the PPI.
