PPC vs. CPM Ads - 800,000+ PVs & 250,000+ uniques / month

    Just curious for some expert opinions in online advertising.

    This is in relation to a client's site that doesn't seem to be monetizing very well. While not directly related to the project I'll be dealing with, we were both a bit curious about something.

    For a site with the stats listed in the title, would it generally be better to go with CPM advertising (what we were thinking) or sticking with CPC? If switching to CPM, what are the better ad services that you'd suggest they look into?

    I can't give much in the way of details, but it's a women-oriented site - relationships, and not things like cooking, housework, etc. (so not like something targeted to webmasters that would be more ad-blind).

    Any general thoughts?

    Lets look at the potential for earnings. 250,000 uniques could provide quite a few clicks, but would that outweigh the earnings from 800,000 PV's.

    I guess you might just want to work the numbers. The only think we don't know for sure is the amount of clicks you would receive. Therefore, I have to ask, how long is your average user staying on a page. How often do the uniques visit, etc. (if you know)

    I think you would earn more now from CPM, but in the long run you will earn much more from CPC.

    Anyone else have any thoughts or am I completely out in left feild.

    I know right now in general there are a lot of repeat visitors to the community area of the site, very few to the blog (what we're working on changing), and I believe when we chatted yesterday the client mentioned that outside of the community, the repeat visitors aren't great (most come from search engines b/c they place as the number one result for some highly competitive and popular keywords in the niche).

    Have ads with both, like google ads are both, adbrite.com you can sell both...

    They've had really poor results with Adbrite, and the adsense isn't bringing in terribly much compared to what we're thinking would be reasonable for a site of that size (and we're not talking an MFA site, but an authority site that's been featured on Fox news, CNN, etc. all before). So let me put it this way since I can't give their stats on earnings obviously... for an authority site in the niche I'd mentioned, with the traffic levels I'd mentioned, what would you consider an acceptable range for revenue (predominantly from advertising) - it can be a broad range... just looking for some monthly estimates that I can compare to what they have now.
