Not just no, but Hell no. PPC and SEO are as separate as apples and oranges. SEO is organic, while PPC is paid. And unless you're Yahoo!, may the two never meet.

Dan, I think you misunderstood the question, unless I did myself

I think they are asking does advertising with PPC affect your organic serps.

    I would say No.

Google have two type of search engine marketing. These can be classified as Organic marketing and Inorganic Marketing.
Search engine optimization(SEO) is comes under organic search engine marketing.
SERPs sponsor results come under the inorganic search engine marketing. both are totally different and there is no chance to interfere one another.

I 100% agree! At Google and most search engines, participating in their PPC offerings has zero influence on your organic rankings. There IS one exception which I believe Dan is eluding to. That is the Search Submit Pro (SSP) program at Yahoo!

You absolutely CAN pay to boost your organic rankings for particular keyword phrases at Yahoo! by participating in their SSP program. They used to manage the program themselves... But now it is administered by a 3rd party (Outrider.com).

Basically, you give Yahoo! (or now Outrider.com) a feed that says, "When my site ranks organically at Yahoo! for keyword X, display "blah" as my <title> in the SERPs, display "blah blah" as my snippet in the SERPs, and add 3 "Quick Links:" just below my SERPs entry pointing to URL1, URL2, and URL3 with the link text of "link text 1", "link text 2", and "link text 3".

You agree to pay Yahoo! on a pay-per-click basis when people click on any of the 3 quick links under your organic SERP listing. In return you get a huge bump in organic rankings because Yahoo! wants people to click on your listings so they get paid.

We had participated in this program for years, spending millions on it over that period of time, and ranked #1 for LOTS of 1 and 2 word head terms over that same period. Earlier this year our SSP contract expired. On the DAY it expired, we dropped in rankings from 20-40 positions and remained there for the next few months when we were not participating in the program. Around mid-year we signed a new contract for SSP and setup a new feed thru outriders.com. On the DAY we went live, we immediately jumped back to #1 for those VERY competitve keyword phrase. I'm talking about keyword phrases w/ well over 150,000,000 results typically.

So at Yahoo! at least, you CAN influence organic rankings by participating in SSP. If you look at any highly competitive verticle you will see examples of it... For example, in the mortgage industry LendingTree.com and QuickenLoans both are participating... Note the Quick Links: and the fact that the <title> displayed in the SERPs does not match the <title> from the URL that ranked in the organic listings.

Will be interesting to see what happens to SSP at Yahoo! when Bing starts serving up their organic results. :)

I agree w/ Dan. To my knowledge Yahoo! is the only site where PPC (specifically, their SSP program) affects organic rankings.
