Powering a molex with a battery

    Hey,

I have a project i'm messing around with and wondered if there's anyone with a little bit of electronics expertise, basically I'm trying to power a hardrive but I don't want to use a psu.

I want it to be wireless so maybe some sort of laptop battery to molex connection??

It's just to make the hardrive spin at idle and the rest of the components within the hardrive have been removed.

Hope I can get some ideas! :)

I think battery will be the best solution. But you need a bit powerful battery as HDD motor will consume it fast.

Alternatively, you can use a battery for which you can find a charger already available.

I don't think you can just stick a battery on the end and hope for the best. Molex connectors are AC Current as all Molex are found in desktop computers attached to power supplies. Batteries all run on DC Current (Direct Current). So if you plug in a hard drive that needs AC current into something that is only DC current, say bye-bye to your hard drive.

The only way you could run it off a battery would be to install a power inverter to convert the current from DC to AC power. The issue with that is they tend to be rather large and now you've lost all portability. If you've got a digital and electrical circuits background, you can always build an inverter yourself, but it's not easy unless you've got the skills.

Well how are laptop hardrives powered? Do they have the same issue?
