I post on some prominent dog related forums and it has helped loads for my dog website. I get about 10-15% of my traffic from forum clicks. Best part of it is, is that people usually read the articles, etc. Quality traffic.

I doubt it's from signature links alone unless the forums you are posting on are very high pr, especially if only a few of them. Including the link in your signature here at DP will surely get you indexed fast, and that it what I find most valuable.
I believe even posting on high pr forums * alone * wont get a Pr6 . you gotta hav backlinks from other high pr sites aswell .
Agreed! Forum posting alone can not give you PR6. Forum signatures can give you good traffic for sure!
You can easily get a pr4, if you have sigs on 100s of reputed forums, but getting a pr6 is really hard..
