What are the general guidelines for posting news articles onto your website? I intent on having a news section on our future e-commerce site where we would post all news articles pertaining to the products we sell. Obviously we don't want to infringe on copyrights so we'll be crediting the authors. What are the general guidelines for this? Should we also link back to where we found the article? What if, for example, the article is by the associated press where it can be found on thousands of websites. Does it matter if we link back to where we found it exactly? Would linking back be detrimental to our SEO cause (duplicate content)? For example, if we're selling toilets, I would want to have this article in our news section: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Delhi/Loo_luxury_on_display_at_toilet_summit/articleshow/2513801.cms Thanks for your time
the general rule of thumb is to always credit and place a link back. however, be aware that there are news agencies that prohibit reproduction of their articles. read the TOS first. i suggest you first seek permission from that news agency, in order to avoid future hassles. also, there are websites that continue to get news from agencies like reuters, AP, afp etc because they have internal agreements (i.e. subscription plans with the news wires). if you want to really be serious with this (and if you have extra budget, that is), you could probably approach companies like www.newsknowledge.com - they provide news feeds, RSS and the like.
Oh wow, that is a great service. I'm looking at: http://www.newsknowledge.com/products/full_text_news_service/custom_news_service.html My only question is, once we have acquired the data feeds can we continue to keep them on our site without additional payments? I'm thinking we would buy a subscription maybe 2-3 months every year but obviously wouldn't want to take off the content when we're not paying for it.
I would rather suggest you a little different. Having news articles on your website is a great idea.Instead of adopting 'links' and other approaches better have a news articles written professionally. This article will have all the links and references in itself and you do not have to bother for anything else. the article will give you all that you require. You may hire the writer for this specific purpose.I myself keep writing these type of articles for many publications. If you prefer I can help you in that respect.
^ ashvaj --- but that would mean that you're still gonna get the data from other original sources. myshtern - i think you can still keep the feeds. i'm a professional journalist and correspondent of a lot of news agencies and if you still need help, just let me know
You are right to some extent. But making a news article out of a press relrease would not attract any such problems.
See the best way is to write the articles yourself. When it comes to news articles it is true that you will find them on thousands of places but the difference is when you add your writing style to it. Whatever article you want to write about, just search for it over the net and read the different version of the article and add your views to it plus site the original source indicating where you got the news part from. When you go on to display links and feeds of other news services the negative impact of that will be your readers going away from your site to that particular site. So better write the articles yourself with your views being the major part of the article. You can go on to add the views of other bloggers who published about the news. This way that article will become very different from what is available on other blogs. And when you write about the views of other bloggers than you will generate a kind of friendship with them which is very necessary to gain fame in blogosphere. The biggest hurdle here will be the time to write the articles yourself. So instead of spending in buying packages better hire someone who will write regular articles for your blog and as you will pay the writer so the articles will be yours forever. (even when you stop paying him..) By the end of this week I plan to end up writing articles till the end of January 2007 and that way I will be available for writing work. I have a year of blogging experience and will generate good articles for your blog if you want?
yup, i agreed with ashvaj. At first you must start to build you credibility and shows that you helping people. I see a lot of experts recommend this method too.
ashvaj - probably. IF you get the press releases directly from credible sources and if the story can be rewritten in a newsworthy angle. just to share my thoughts --- as someone with nearly 7 years of journalism experience, i'd feel really bad if someone else would "copy" my story. whether he or she would rewrite it, that'd still be sad and a big no-no in journalism ethics. there are a lot of news articles that simply cannot be rewritten - i.e. the journalist got the scoop exclusively. i still highly recommend that either you get a professional type of service like newsknowledge or seek a partnership of sorts with the news agencies. that partnership can come in either an exchange deal (a small button of the news outlet's website or something). at least have the decency to say that you do have plans of reprinting the articles. just my two cents. eragonies, i'm a bit lost with your point
You are absolutely rigght.Being a journalist yourself you know it very well that a news article need to be written in a different way.I am writing news articles for news agencies. I prefer press releases from reputed sources only. Many times clients ask me to write the press release also. All my family works with this profession and therefore I understand what you are trying to convey. In my opinion rewritting a news article is not a very good idea.Professionallyalso this may not result in to a qualitative content. This is the best way. Hiring someone professional will be all the more beneficial. I also recommend this.
